doctor's orders...

Josiah had his 4-month pediatric appt. Can't tell you how much we love our doc, btw. She is incredibly thorough and takes the time to explain things to us.

Josiah is now 11 lbs, 10 oz!!! (That's still the 3rd percentile.) But he's 24.5 inches in height, which is the 25th percentile! Woohoo! At least he's not in the 3rd percentile or lower for something. =) It is so great to see him growing so well. Praise God! The doc is very pleased by how he's growing and said we no longer have to keep Josiah on the high-caloric formula. She doesn't quite want to move him on to regular Smiliac/Enfamil stuff yet. So we'll be trying something more like regular formula, but gentler on his tummy. We will probably try to make that change in a couple weeks.

Smiles will remain on zantac for reflux since the doc wants to make sure he does ok during the formula transition. He could be on a higher dosage since he's gained weight, but since he's been doing well on the lower dosage, she wants to keep him there. No point in increasing his dosage if the lower dosage is proving effective.

As for Josiah's head, he doesn't have to wear a helmet! =) Yay! (A couple of people said he may have to wear one to correct his flat head.) Doc said that she's not as concerned about his flat head as much as she is about the muscles in his neck getting tight. She assured us that his head would eventually round out as he's able to hold his head up better on his own and not be on his back as much. The main concern is his neck muscles tightening on his right side and him just getting too accustomed to looking on the right. Doc said that we don't want him looking like he's posing for a graduation picture all the time. =) So she reminded us to continue doing tummy time and showed us a neck exercise we can do with him to help strengthen and stretch out the muscles on his right side. In the meantime, she also wanted us to contact a county program (don't remember the name of it) that would be able to come out and do an evaluation on his neck and see if he would need some physical therapy. The great thing is that it's all free. Doc said if we do the exercises with Josiah, they may come out and say that he's fine and doesn't need any extra help. Or they may discern that it's a minor issue and show us some more exercises to do with him. Worse case scenario would be that they would have to come out and do some physical therapy with him. So we'll see how it goes. =)

Regarding the catnapping, Doc said it's pretty normal for this age. Usually, babies will be great overnight sleepers and poor nappers or great nappers, but poor overnight sleepers. They rarely are good at both initially. As he gets older in the next few months, he should get better at napping, especially when we are able to start him on solids. That's another big change for Josiah... Doc said he can start solids in the next couple months, but she wants us to fully transition him onto the new formula before trying solids with him. For now, she recommended for us trying to put him to bed earlier so he's not such a mess in the evenings.

Josiah's swaddling days are now numbered. =) He would be jumping for pure joy now if he could. He passionately HATES being swaddled. But the doc said it's a suffocation hazard for him to be swaddled for too long. Unfortunately, even though he hates it, he sleeps better with it. Smiles wakes himself up with his arms and hands when he's not swaddled. He will have his hands all up in his face and get himself upset, flustered, and then cry. But doc said we should also transition him out of that within the next couple months.

Lots of new changes for our baby boy... We'll keep you posted on how he does!
